How an 8-Week Phenology Wheel Unit Study Transformed Our Homeschool
Our group recently completed an 8-week phenology wheel unit study that I created for our homeschool enrichment program. In this blog post, I share what made this unit so engaging and versatile, from its multi-age adaptability to its integration of multiple subjects like science, art, and writing. I also reflect on the joys and challenges of designing the study and how it can be reused and refreshed for any season.

Our Journey Through an 8-Week Phenology Wheel Unit Study: Lessons, Growth, and Appreciation
This year, our homeschool group began an exciting educational adventure: an 8-week phenology wheel unit study. Phenology, the study of seasonal changes and their effects on plants, animals, and ecosystems, became the perfect foundation for a deep and meaningful exploration of nature. This unit turned out to be so much more than I expected—it engaged everyone, fostered creativity, and brought subjects to life in a way that felt cohesive and refreshing.
A Unit Study for All Ages
One of the aspects I appreciated most about this unit was how it seamlessly engaged everyone, regardless of age or skill level. As a homeschooling and nature schooling family, finding a curriculum that challenges older children while being accessible to younger ones can be tricky. The phenology wheel was a perfect solution. The youngest children in the group could draw and observe the natural world, while the older children delved into more advanced concepts like seasonal patterns, weather changes, and the interconnectedness of ecosystems. It brought our group together, with everyone contributing at their own pace and ability.
Cross-Subject Integration
This unit study didn’t just cover science—it spanned multiple subjects in a way that felt natural and fluid. Through journaling and labeling the wheel, we worked on writing and spelling. Observing the weather patterns tied into math as we tracked and graphed temperatures. Art came alive as we painted leaves, sketched seasonal changes, and created wheels to showcase our observations. Even history and cultural traditions were woven in as we discussed how people in different eras and regions tracked and celebrated the seasons.
Engagement and Curiosity
What surprised me most was how genuinely interested and engaged everyone was throughout the study. Each week brought new discoveries, whether it was observing the first frost, identifying migrating birds, or noticing the fallen leaves collecting on the forest floors as winter approached. The phenology wheel became a regular point of discussion, encouraging all of us to slow down, observe, and reflect on the world around us.
Work Upfront, But Worth It
Designing this unit study was a labor of love. I spent hours researching, creating templates, and organizing activities that could stretch across 8 weeks. Initially, I wondered if the effort would pay off, mostly because I have purchased and never used other unit studies, but seeing the children’s excitement and learning unfold confirmed that it was worth every moment. And the best part? With a few modifications, this study is adaptable to any season. We can revisit it in spring, summer, and fall, making the experience feel new and fresh each time.
Why Phenology Matters
The phenology wheel gave us a unique way to connect deeply with nature while covering essential educational goals. It taught us not just about the natural world, but also about patience, observation, and the importance of noticing the small changes that often go unseen in our busy lives. It was a unit study that wasn’t just about learning facts—it was about cultivating a mindset of wonder and respect for our environment.
Looking Ahead
As we wrapped up our 8-week journey, I couldn’t help but feel excited about repeating this study in a different season. It’s a flexible tool that will continue to evolve with our group, offering new insights and opportunities for growth every time we return to it.
If you’re considering a phenology wheel unit study for your own family, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s engaging, versatile, and incredibly rewarding—for children and parents alike. And if the idea of designing one from scratch feels overwhelming, don’t worry!
